About Alexander Devasia

Born in 1963 in Punnapra, Kerala, Alexander is an artist whose multidisciplinary practice spans painting, drawing, film and video. He studied Painting at the College of Fine Arts, Trivandrum (1979–1985), before completing his postgraduate studies at the Faculty of Fine Arts, M. S. University, Baroda (1986–1988). Over the past four decades, his work has been exhibited extensively across India and Europe through a series of solo and group exhibitions. Notable solo presentations include Mekham – Speaking Clouds (2008) and Song of the Crowd (2006) at Pundole Art Gallery, Mumbai; Singing in the Rain (2005) at Galerie Mueller & Plate, Munich, and Pundole Art Gallery, Mumbai; as well as exhibitions in Regensburg, Weßling and Munich, Germany, and at venues including the Times of India Gallery, Cochin, Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai, Gallery 7 and Chitram Art Gallery. His work has also featured in important group exhibitions such as Representation II, Double-Enders, East-West, Contemporary Art from India at the State Museum for Ethnology, Munich, and Foreign Artists Living and Working in Munich.

Alexander's practice moves fluidly between painting and moving image, often engaging with memory, place, landscape and everyday life. In collaboration with artist and filmmaker Sylvie Bantle, he has produced several documentary and video works, including Mortuary – Joseph (1999), recipient of the Bronze Award at the 22nd Tokyo Video Festival, Santhi Bhavan – House of Peace (2000), Chakara (2001), Searching for the Dancing God… Kerala's Last Shaman (2007), Morning Paper and Tea (2003), Rain (2005), and the video installation 23 Faces – 23 Biographies (2007). Their films have been screened internationally, including at the Hermann Hesse Festival in Germany. Alexander currently lives and works between India and Germany.
